About Taormina Cathedral

The Duomo of Taormina, dedicated to Saint Nicholas of Bari, is a medieval church located in the historic center of Taormina. Built between the 13th and 14th centuries on the remains of an earlier basilica, it features the appearance of a Sicilian Romanesque-Gothic fortress church. It has undergone several renovations over the centuries, including major post-war restoration.

The Duomo of Taormina, also known as the Basilica Cattedrale of San Nicolò di Bari, is located in the main square of Taormina and is one of the city’s most important medieval monuments. Its construction dates back to the 13th century on the site of an earlier medieval basilica, and it was later rebuilt and modified between the 15th and 16th centuries, with further alterations in the following centuries.

The building is an example of Sicilian Romanesque-Gothic architecture and reflects the characteristics of the so-called “ecclesia munita,” or fortress church. This defensive architectural concept is visible in its solid structure, battlemented façade, and overall fortress-like appearance.

The interior has a Latin cross plan with three naves and three apses. The central nave is supported by six columns of pink Taormina marble, some of which are monolithic and likely come from the ancient Greek Theatre of the city. The ceilings are wooden, with beams decorated with motifs inspired by Arabic designs interpreted in a Gothic style.

Over time, the church underwent several modifications: Renaissance-style portals were added in the 15th and 16th centuries, a Baroque portal was introduced in the 17th century, and further decorative changes followed. After damage suffered during World War II, it was restored between 1945 and 1948 by architect Armando Dillon, who uncovered the original medieval structures hidden beneath Baroque additions.

In 1980, the Duomo was elevated to the rank of minor basilica by Pope John Paul II. Today it remains one of the most important historical and religious landmarks in Taormina
