About Church of Santa Maria Alemanna

The Church of Santa Maria Alemanna in Messina is a rare example of pure Gothic architecture in Sicily, dating back to the 13th century. Founded in 1220 under Frederick II and linked to the Teutonic Knights, it was originally part of a priory with a hospital for pilgrims. After centuries of neglect and damage, it has been restored and is now used for cultural events and exhibitions.

The Church of Santa Maria Alemanna in Messina is one of the most significant examples of medieval Gothic architecture in Sicily. It was founded in 1220 by order of Emperor Frederick II of Swabia and entrusted to the Teutonic Knights, who established a priory and an adjacent hospital to assist pilgrims and crusaders returning from the Holy Land.

Over the centuries, the complex experienced a long period of decline. After the Teutonic Knights left, it changed management and gradually fell into abandonment. It suffered further damage from a lightning strike in 1612 and from the earthquakes of 1783 and 1908, although its main structural elements survived.

Architecturally, the church features a basilica layout with three naves and three apses, pointed Gothic arches, and clustered pillars typical of continental Gothic style. The remaining decoration is limited mainly to sculpted capitals with floral motifs and human or grotesque figures, while some surviving portals show Byzantine and Romanesque influences.

After restoration work carried out mainly in the 20th century, the church was reopened to the public in 2001. Today it serves as a cultural venue for exhibitions, events, and artistic activities.
