About Alcantara Gorges

The Alcantara Gorges are a natural canyon in eastern Sicily located along the Alcantara River between Motta Camastra and Castiglione di Sicilia. They were formed by the interaction between ancient lava flows from Mount Etna and the river’s erosion, which shaped striking basalt column formations. Today they are part of the Alcantara River Park and are a major natural attraction.

The Alcantara Gorges (Gole dell’Alcantara), also known as the Larderia Gorges, are located in the Alcantara River valley in northeastern Sicily, between the municipalities of Motta Camastra and Castiglione di Sicilia. They are a narrow and spectacular canyon carved over time by the river through ancient lava flows originating from Mount Etna.

The gorge walls are made of columnar basalt formed by the rapid cooling of lava, which created distinctive geometric structures, often hexagonal or prismatic in shape. These formations reach heights of up to about 25 meters (and in some descriptions even more), while the canyon width ranges from only a few meters in the narrowest sections to slightly wider areas.

The landscape is defined by the contrast between dark volcanic rock and the clear, cold waters of the Alcantara River flowing through the canyon. The geological origin is linked to one or more lava flows that, upon cooling in contact with water, formed the columnar structures visible today.

The area is part of the Alcantara River Park, established to protect the natural and geological heritage of the river and its surroundings. Today the gorges are one of the most important natural attractions in eastern Sicily and can be accessed from several points along the river
